INCIDENCE

In Portugal, the estimated incidence rate for prostate cancer is 140 per 100,000 population.1 With the European average of estimated prostate cancer incidence at 153.9 per 100,000,1 the incidence rate in Portugal is lower than the EU average.

MORTALITY

In Portugal, the estimated mortality for prostate cancer is 39.7 per 100,000, making prostate cancer mortality in Portugal higher than the EU27 average of 32.1 per 100,000.1 Mortality rates for prostate cancer in neighbouring Spain are much lower at 25.7 per 100,000.1

SURVIVAL

Five-year survival rates for treatable cancers, including prostate cancer, improved in Portugal from 81.3% between 1995-1999 to 90.9% between 2010–2014.1

In 2017, Portugal approved the National Programme for Oncological Diseases.

CLINICAL GUIDELINES

Updated Portuguese Clinical Guidelines on the Treatment of Prostate Cancer (2019) aim to provide clinicians with guidance (based on current scientific evidence) for treating patients with prostate cancer. The recommended care pathway includes patient access to*:

Review by a multidisciplinary team
Support from a specialist nurse
Holistic needs assessment
A tailored treatment plan
Nutrition and exercise advice
Psychological support
Regular care reviews

There is 1 urologist for every 33,333 inhabitants of Portugal,1 considerably more than in its Spanish neighbour, which has 1 urologist per 11,750 inhabitants.2

Cost of cancer

The direct cost of cancer care and treatment in Portugal per person is €96,1 which is lower than the European average of €154 per person.2 Neighbouring Spain spends a slightly higher amount at €112 per capita.1

Cancer medicines spend

€39 is spent on cancer medicines per capita in Portugal,1 which is considerably lower than nearby countries, such as Spain (€61) and France (€77).
