INCIDENCE
At a rate of 165.9 per 100,000 population, prostate cancer incidence in Denmark is higher than the European average of 153.9 per 100,000.1 Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed malignancy in males in Denmark, where approximately 4,500 men are diagnosed every year.2 The incidence of prostate cancer in Denmark rose approximately 50% from 2000 to 2009 in parallel with the introduction of prostate-specific antigen (PSA)-testing.3

MORTALITY
Danish mortality rates for prostate cancer are significantly higher than the EU27 average of 32.1 per 100,000 population, at a rate of 48.5 per 100,000.1 This makes the mortality rate in Denmark one of the highest in the EU, with only Estonia having a higher mortality rate.1

SURVIVAL
In Denmark, the 5-year net survival rate for prostate cancer patients from 2010-2014 was 85.6%.1 This is lower than other Nordic countries, such as Sweden and Finland, where the 5-year net survival rates are 90.7% and 93.2% respectively.

NATIONAL POLICES
Denmark’s fourth National Cancer Strategy has been running since 2017 and will end in 2020.
The government wants to support the active use of patient-reported information, and the government and the regions have already previously agreed to spread the use of patient-reported information for prostate cancer patients.
CLINICAL GUIDELINES
In Denmark, the Danish Urological Cancer Group’s Prostate Cancer Clinical Guidelines set out recommendations for the treatment of prostate cancer. The recommended care pathway, includes patient access to*:

Denmark is in the bottom 3 EU countries in terms of the number of citizens who have access to a urologist, at a rate of 50,000 inhabitants per 1 urologist.1 Only Ireland (173,913 citizens per urologist)2 and the UK (64,260 citizens per urologist)3 have a lower ratio.

Cost of cancer
In 2018, the direct cost of cancer in Denmark was €259 per person,1 significantly higher than the European average of €154 per person.2 Finland, with a similar population size, spends €153 per person.1 Whilst a number of factors contribute to improved outcomes for those affected by prostate cancer, studies have shown that those countries that invest more in cancer care tend to achieve better outcomes for patients.3
