INCIDENCE

Prostate cancer incidence in Cyprus is lower than the European average of 153.9 per 100,000, at a rate of 136 per 100,000 population.1 There is no formal comprehensive screening for prostate cancer in Cyprus, however individuals can specifically request screening through their doctors.2

MORTALITY

In Cyprus, mortality rates for prostate cancer are lower than the EU27 average of 32.1 per 100,000 population, at a rate of 30.5 per 100,000.1

SURVIVAL

Cyprus comes top of the list of EU countries in terms of 5-year survival rates for prostate cancer, at 99.2%.1 This is higher than Lithuania, which has the second best 5-year survival rate at 94.3%.1 At the other end of the scale, Bulgaria has the lowest 5-year survival rate in the EU at 68.3%.1

NATIONAL POLICES

Cyprus’ National Strategy for Cancer dates from 2019, published by the Ministry of Health. The strategy focuses on five key pillars: prevention, early diagnosis and treatment, re-integration and psycho-social support, incident recording and research. Prostate cancer is mentioned in the Strategy, in the context of population-based screening programmes, and the impact of physical activity in preventing cancer.
