INCIDENCE
Prostate cancer incidence in Belgium is below the European average of 153.9 per 100,000 population, at a rate of 139.9 per 100,000.1 The age-adjusted incidence of prostate cancer decreased in Belgium between 2006 and 2017, despite being the most frequently diagnosed cancer amongst men.2 To note is that national data can in some instances deviate from international datasets. According to the most recent Belgian Cancer registry data from 2017, the crude rate is 171.6 per 100,000.3

At 28.6 per 100,000 people, mortality rates for prostate cancer in Belgium are below the EU27 average of 32.1 per 100,000 population, and significantly below countries like Estonia and Sweden.1

SURVIVAL
From 2010-2014, the 5-year net survival rate for prostate cancer patients in Belgium was 93.8%.1 This puts the Belgian 5-year net survival rate in the top 3 in the EU, overtaken only by Lithuania (94.3%) and Cyprus (99.2%).1 To note is that national data can in some instances deviate from international datasets. According to the most recent Belgian Cancer registry data from 2017, the 5-year survival rate is 95.4%.2

In Belgium, there are approximately 22,500 inhabitants to every 1 urologist.1,2 This is a higher number of urologists than in neighbouring France3 and the Netherlands,4 where there are approximately 44,000 and 47,000 inhabitants respectively per every 1 urologist.

Cost of cancer
In 2018, the direct cost of cancer in Belgium was €284 per person,1 higher than the European average of €154 per person.2 Whilst a number of factors contribute to improved outcomes for those affected by prostate cancer, studies have shown that those countries that invest more in cancer care tend to achieve better outcomes for patients.3
