INCIDENCE
Prostate cancer incidence in Estonia is the third highest in the EU, at a rate of 204.2 per 100,000.1 This is significantly above the European average of 153.9 per 100,000. No official prostate cancer screening programme has been introduced in Estonia, although in clinical practice, primary care physicians routinely offer the test to middle-aged and elderly men.2

MORTALITY
In line with the high incidence rates, prostate cancer mortality rates in Estonia are significantly higher than the EU27 average of 32.1 per 100,000, at 55 per 100,000 population.1 This makes Estonia’s mortality rate the highest in the EU. The other Baltic countries also have higher than EU average rates: Lithuania at 46.1 per 100,000 and Latvia at 46.9 per 100,000.1

SURVIVAL
From 2010-2014, the 5-year net survival rate for prostate cancer patients in Estonia was 86.3%.1 This puts Estonia in the bottom 10 EU countries. Despite this, survival rates in Estonia continue to improve, probably due predominantly to extensive opportunistic prostate-specific antigen testing of middle-aged and elderly men.2

Cost of cancer
In 2018, the direct cost of cancer in Estonia was €73 per person,1 well below the European average of €154 per person and one of the lowest in the EU.2 Whilst a number of factors contribute to improved outcomes for those affected by prostate cancer, studies have shown that those countries that invest more in cancer care tend to achieve better outcomes for patients.3
