In Latvia, the estimated mortality for prostate cancer is 46.9 per 100,000.1 As with prostate cancer incidence, mortality in Latvia is higher than the EU average of 32.1 per 100,000.1 In fact, Latvia has the fourth highest prostate cancer mortality rate in Europe, behind only Sweden, Denmark, and Estonia.

Latvia’s cancer plan for 2017-2020, the Improving health services in the field of oncology plan was developed to improve the situation in primary diagnosis and treatment of the most common cancers, improve the scope and quality of existing screenings, and expand the availability of palliative care. The plan does not include specific objectives related to prostate cancer.
A new Plan for the Improvement of Health Care Services in the Field of Oncology for 2022–2024 is currently subject to public consultation. The overarching goal of the Plan is to promote the availability of people-centered and integrated health care services in oncology, while preventing premature mortality from cancer.

In terms of the number of urologists per inhabitant, Latvia comes towards the lower end of the table of European countries with 1 urologist per 40,000 inhabitants.1 At the top end of the scale, Greece has the highest number of urologists per inhabitant with 10,000 citizens to every urologist.2

Cost of cancer
The annual direct health cost of cancer per person in Latvia is around €57 – one of the lowest in Europe.1 This is less than the European average of €154 per person.2 Whilst a number of factors contribute to improved outcomes for those affected by prostate cancer, studies have shown that those countries that invest more in cancer care tend to achieve better outcomes for patients.3
