In Hungary, the estimated incidence rate for prostate cancer is 133.2 per 100,000 population.1 With the European average of estimated prostate cancer incidence being 153.9 per 100,000, the incidence rate in Hungary is lower than the EU average.1

There is no up-to-date data on the average five-year survival rates for prostate cancer in Hungary available, indicating the need for better outcome data collection for people affected by prostate cancer.

NATIONAL POLICES
In 2006, Hungary issued the National Cancer Control Programme. The increasing number of prostate cancers is mentioned as one of the causes for higher incidence of cancer within the male population in Hungary. Healthy diet is listed as a prevention method for prostate cancer. Hungarian authorities are currently developing a new cancer plan with the objective of improving patients’ survival and quality of life. In addition, a tax-benefit package has been introduced for patients suffering from prostate cancer.1

There is approximately 1 urologist per 39,624 inhabitants in Hungary.1,2 Compared to the EU average, Hungary has fewer doctors (3.3 vs. 3.6 per 1 000 population). Workforce shortages have been exacerbated by an ageing health workforce and the emigration of many doctors (particularly specialists), which accelerated after the country’s accession to the EU in 2004.3

Cancer medicines spend
€40 is spent on cancer medicines per capita in Hungary.1 Cancer medicines accounted for more than half of the direct costs in Hungary, in 2018, along with Croatia, Spain and Bulgaria.1 The question of access to medicines has gained attention in recent years. The government has taken action to engage in regional collaborations to improve equal access to medicines.2
