INCIDENCE

Prostate cancer incidence in Finland is higher than the European average of  153.9 per 100,000 population, at a rate of 206.2 per 100,000.1 Screening for prostate cancer is not recommended at the population level.2

Mortality rates for prostate cancer in Finland are slightly higher than the EU27 average of 32.1 per 100,000 population, at a rate of 33 per 100,000.1

SURVIVAL

From 2010-2014, the 5-year net survival rate for prostate cancer patients in Finland was the fourth-highest in the EU, behind Belgium, Lithuania and Cyprus.1

In Finland, prostate cancer is mentioned in the national Cancer prevention, early detection and developing rehabilitation support plan (2014-2025).

CLINICAL GUIDELINES

Finland’s ‘Current Care Guidelines’ are independent, evidence-based clinical practice guidelines and cover important issues related to Finnish health, medical treatment as well as prevention of diseases. The 2014 Prostate Cancer guidelines set out the recommended care pathway, includes patient access to*:

Holistic needs assessment
A tailored treatment plan
Nutrition and exercise advice
Psychological support
Regular care reviews

Access to Specialists

The number of urologists per citizen in Finland is relatively low, with 47,272 citizens to every 1 urologist.1 This puts Finland in the bottom 4 EU countries in terms of access to urologists, behind Ireland,2 the UK3 and Denmark.4

Cost of cancer

In 2018, the direct cost of cancer in Finland was €153 per person,1 on average with the European average of €154 per person.2 Other Nordic countries, such as Denmark and Sweden, spend €259 and €187 respectively.1 Whilst a number of factors contribute to improved outcomes for those affected by prostate cancer, studies have shown that those countries that invest more in cancer care tend to achieve better outcomes for patients.3

Cancer medicines spend

Finland spends €60 per capita on cancer medicines, similar to Sweden which spends €57 per capita.1 Austria spends the highest amount per capita on cancer medicines in the EU, at €108 per capita.1 At the other end of the scale, Greece and Estonia only spend €4 per capita.1
