Prostate cancer incidence in Austria is below the European average of 153.9 per 100,000 population, at a rate of 141.2 per 100,000.1 Like in many other countries, prostate cancer is the most common malignancy in men in Austria.2

MORTALITY
Mortality rates for prostate cancer are again slightly below the EU27 average of 32.1 per 100,000 population, at a rate of 32 per 100,000.1 In Austria, however, only lung cancer exceeds prostate cancer in terms of cancer mortality.2

SURVIVAL
From 2010-2014, the 5-year survival rate for prostate cancer patients in Austria was 90.2%.1 For comparison, the 5-year net survival rate for neighbouring countries such as Czechia and Slovakia is 85.3% and 74.7% respectively, but is lower than countries like France and Germany.1

NATIONAL POLICES
The 2014 National Cancer Framework Programme guides Austria’s cancer response. The National Cancer Framework Programme is regarded as a strategic expert paper with the status of a recommendation, which was drawn up on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Health and provides an overview of the most important fields in oncology for health policy.
In addition, the Austrian Society of Urology has adopted the prostate cancer early detection proposals currently being promoted by Europa Uomo and the European Association of Urology as a model for every European country. The proposals comprise an algorithm showing who should be given a PSA test, when, and how different groups should be followed up.1

Cost of cancer
In 2018, the direct cost of cancer in Austria was €289 per person,1 higher than the European average of €154 per person.2 This is similar to Germany, which spends €308 per person.1 Whilst a number of factors contribute to improved outcomes for those affected by prostate cancer, studies have shown that those countries that invest more in cancer care tend to achieve better outcomes for patients.3
